#askjuice'd Session 1

We love to interact with our customers, getting their opinions, solving some doubts and having laughs together over some of our findings on the Internet! Love the discussion we had together. That is the reason askjuiced sessions were created, so we could get together and share our ideas about juicing and healthy living.

Here are some common questions we had for our first session of "askjuiced" held about a week ago. Do keep the questions coming and we are looking forward to the second session together sometime around Christmas. Join us for a chat or drop us an email to be featured in our #askjuiced session.

Juicing is currently trending right now. While it is said to be all good for our body but I am not too excited about not having solids. How can one survive only on liquid, veggies and fruits? #askjuiced

Yeap! We at G.I.Juicery thinks that it is not beneficial to be living on juice alone for long term but our body needed that break from all the harmful radicals from time to time and juicing is proven to be the most effective ways. Each bottle is formulated with the correct combination of fruits and vegetables to keep you satiated. We also believe that with our cleanse, you will pick-up some excellent habits along the way, such as drinking adequate amount of water, getting the sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables servings and making better and wiser food choices. While on normal days, JFE was created by us for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle yet still enjoy your food.

What is the difference? Why is cold-pressed the best way to enjoy my vegetables? I am still consuming my vegetables via stir fry, steam, soup, paste and etc. #askjuiced

The most important point is keeping the micronutrients and enzymes in our vegetables intact to benefit fully from it. Micronutrients and enzymes are very vulnerable to heat, by stir frying, steaming, making soup or paste you are actually destroying a lot of the important micronutrients and enzymes. We would suggest eating RAW but to many it is not palatable, hence we cold-pressed these vegetables for you, so that you get to enjoy the taste while getting the full advantage of consuming your vegetables RAW.

I was told that juicing starves the body and in so breaks down muscle mass to get fuel. Is that true? #askjuiced

There is absolutely no truth to this statement. According to metabolic biochemistry study, juicing is not starvation;

Firstly, it is simply replacing your solid intakes with right combinations of vegetables and fruits. During cleanse, you will be partaking 7 bottles of Juice’d each day which consist of 10 to 14 kilograms of produce. Starvation during your cleanse? Highly Unlikely!

Secondly, muscle breakdown. The body number one fuel is CARBOHYDRATE, follow by fat and lastly protein. Our body is built in the way to be resilient and smart at the same time. Juice’d cleanse is schedule in a way where we constantly top-up your body’s need for fuel. Firstly there are carbohydrates in the form of fructose found in fruits and also honey that we formulate into our bottles of Juice’d. Next we have almond, cashew and corn to replenish and energize you. Therefore it is not possible that your body will need to burn your muscle mass during juicing to get fuel. Juice’d without worries!

From information online, I was told that juicing consist no protein & healthy fats and our body is merely subsisting on carbohydrate alone, wouldn’t the glucose from fruits and vegetables cause sudden surge of insulin? #askjuiced

The Internet is the source of all sorts of information; we developed a love-hate relationship with it. We love it because it opens up our world to tones of information that will take us years to digest but we also need to weigh the source and verify the information we got online. There is absolutely no truth to the claim that juicing consist no protein and healthy fats. Do quick checks on the ingredient of each bottle of Juice’d. You will find that it consists of healthy combination items that balance out protein and healthy fats, in just the right portion the body needs.

Some of my friends said our hair will shed and our nails will turn brittle and not shiny due to the lack of protein if we were to sign on a juice cleanse as we are not getting enough protein from liquefied kale. #askjuiced

According to Reference Nutrient Intake (RNI), indeed it is true we get only 4% of protein from 100g of kale, that is the reason why we combine example: almond = 42%*, cashew = 36%*, corn = 18%* to make a total balance cleanse. Although protein is the main source of healthy shiny hair and nail, a balance of other important nutrients such as Iron, Folate and Beta-Carotene found in our spinach and Vitamin A in carrots make them shine and grow healthily. Our body does not survive solely on Protein but various arrays of nutrients to shine bright and healthy.
* Statistic is shown for 100g of each produce.

Fresh-pressed green juice has two whole apples in it which turn into hundreds of empty sugar calories, we might over consume and also drinking is not as satisfying as consuming apples whole. #askjuiced

Although we are not to disclose our recipes, we are very sure you are misinformed about the two whole apples in a single serving of green juice. Each bottle is carefully thought through and made by our nutritionist so that none of the nutrients go to waste and no over-indulgence will occur. Test out the color and taste as well, green juice with two whole apple will come out pale green while the combinations of healthy fruits & vegetables in Juice’d will give you darker green appearance, as for taste two whole apples in a bottle will certainly dominate the serving and the taste of apple is so familiar we are able to detect them instantaneously.

As for satisfaction, it is very much a personal preference. There are two types of fibers: Soluble and Insoluble fibers. Soluble fiber is the one found in cold-pressed juices while insoluble fibers bind most of the micronutrients are found in whole apples. In order to fully tap into the power of the apple, we need soluble fiber and as for the feeling of fullness, both fibers enable our body to send the signal that we are satiated. Give Juice’d a try you might like the goodness you drink! As people said “Mind Over Matter”

Living on MAD

We were perusing through articles about fitness and health the other day when something interesting yet depressing caught our eyes. As Malaysian we should be proud to be awarded something or to have came out on top in a certain category but not this one. The article indicated that we are the "Fattest Country in South East Asia" (article here) and as we are famous for going the length, Malaysia is named "The Fattest Asian Country" merely six months later (article here) indicating that 55% of Malaysian are on the fatter or obese side. This is no laughing matter as we need to take it as a wake up call.

Tic-Toc! We need to stop this ticking time bomb. Why? With obesity we are running the risk of type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, stroke, hypertension to name some (Source: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs311/en/). Hence we should not take these warning lightly or be proud of these achievements and continue on with our lives ignoring the danger that is lurking right around the corner. You might say it is not you, but we know someone or live near someone who is. Let's educate ourselves so we could be a wiser or a helping hand.

It is no surprise that we received such accolades, given that Malaysian survived on what we called MAD : Malaysian Accustomed Diet.

  1. Let's look through our daily diet. Roti Canai with a glass of teh tarik at mamak for breakfast, laksa noodle for lunch and fried rice with fried chicken for dinner, not including our tea break and supper. These are just some examples of the things we mainly consumed. It is generally fast food, highly processed and fat laden food or sweet food. Being a true Malaysian we can't deny our love for fried stuff and sweet kuihs. Being a multi-racial country, the temptations are even stronger during festive seasons. We have sweet pineapple tarts for Chinese New Year, ketupat and rendang for Hari Raya and Muruku (that's our favorite) for Deepavali. These are the contributing reasons in claiming the top spot as the fattest nation in Asia.
  2. Now try walking the parks or visiting the fitness centers across Malaysia. Malaysia has the estimate of 30 million in population and only 10 percent of people admitted in our survey that they exercise or jog at least three to four times a week. Main reason for not putting exercise as a priority is "no time". The lack of exercise and consumption of MAD had us living on the edge.
  3. Lastly : Fast Food! Everywhere you turn huge fast food franchise is never too far, usually painted in bright colors attracting and welcoming us to dine with them. Every housing area has not one but multiple fast food franchises. We are spoilt for choice. Children are craving them and us adult with heavy work schedules find it convenient with their drive through services and their strings of cheap lunch and dinner value savings meals, it is our solution to quick and affordable lunch and dinner.
Being Malaysian and trying to be healthy is never easy. We are constantly living on MAD and as a result gaining weight is inevitable. There is of course hope for all of us, with effort and determination we can relinquish the number one spot and journey toward healthier lifestyle.

One of the way is definitely juicing. Juicing is a way to start the ball rolling and here at Juice'd by G.I.Juicery we have prepared a several types of program to suit every lifestyles and needs.

  • One can try our cleanse, a very effective way to clean up our system and rid off hard to kick eating habits.
  • As for our obese and overweight friends, our in-house nutritionist will guide you step by step through our guided trim program, to slowly help you recognize your root problems and taking them down one by one, ushering you to healthier and better lifestyle.
  • For the remaining healthy, fit Malaysian do not let MAD slowly take over but instead continue to stay healthy with our JFE (Juice'd For Everyone) Packs to top up and ensure that you continue to stay on the right track, enjoying the best life has to offer.
Things are definitely possible and with determination we can do it! Malaysia "a healthier nation"? YES WE CAN!

With that said : Let's Juice'd!

Keeping Coffee At Bay

Someday I will make a healthier choice! Someday I will drink lesser coffee! All your someday leads to no days at all. Why not start today?

As a nutritionist I have encounter many different individuals. Those self confessed coffee addicts admit that they have more than a cup of coffee throughout the day and there is no way out of it. The extreme of the situation is 20 cups a day and I am not joking or exaggerating. There are also those who survive only on coffee and at times skip meals with just coffee as their only source of energy. How can one make a healthier and balance choice? Can we lose our dependent on coffee?

The answers that I got in return are as interesting:

  • No Way! I lose focus when I miss my cup!
  • I am not a coffee addict! You mentioned 20 cups! I consumed only 10% of it, one or two cups a day. That would make no harm right?
  • I only start my day with coffee, i mix and match other drinks so no problem!
  • Nooooo! I tried before! I experience coffee withdrawal symptoms like shivering body and shaky hands.
  • I get nauseous if I don't start my day with coffee.
  • I tried but the lack of energy is not worth it, so I gave up!
You may laugh and say "uh-ah not me!" or maybe as of now red flags are raised as a reminder of the real you. How do I get off! What is the deal?

The deal?

  • The liver needs more focus to process and breakdown caffeine intake and more than usual consumption will flood the system with more than it can handle.
  • In case you didn't know caffeine is some kind of drug and it is something you can do without. (No wonder your body crave more of it each day!)
  • Excessive caffeine intake will strip the body cells of water that helps to balance our beauty and vitality. (Dry and dull skin? That's the sign...)
How to get off coffee?
Follow our step by step! We suggest you get off slowly rather than jumping head-first or some called it "cold turkey".

Day 1 & 2 : Cut your intake by half! If you are consuming 6 cups a day try 3 instead.
Drink at the longest interval of time. Try sipping them slowly!

Day 3: Hold steady to your 3 cups a day and try mixing in decaf coffee instead.

Day 4: Cut down to 1 or 2 cups and exchange your usual coffee with full decaf and add in
1 cup of caffeinated green tea

Day 5: Try starting off your day with 1 cup of decaf coffee and then slowly consume
           decaf green tea as well

Day 6 & 7 : Curb every coffee attack with a cup of decaf green tea or any kind of herbal                     tea.

If you need longer time go proceed to the next step do so! Progress slowly but surely. For those who are strong enough to accomplish day 7! Please accept our sincere salute for having strong resolve to break free from comfort zone on your journey to a healthier, sexier and better version of YOU!

Cheers and see you soon

Coffee and Cleanse.....

Coffee and Cleanse, Cleanse and Coffee.... Seems like a rhyming phrase (or not!) if you are into word rhyming but both are actually of the complete opposite. With that said we are not anti-coffee, we do enjoy a cup of warm aromatic comforting coffee at times.

Many of our clients share their excitement when signing up for Cleanse and the results that they will get. All the good signs motivate them but when it comes to the statement "STAY OFF COFFEE during cleanse" we heard many protests and unwillingness. We are not telling our clients how to live life but simply sharing what is good for all of us. Here are some reasons why.

1) Coffee is acidic
Yes it is! In fact one of the ways to determine grade and quality of coffee in the laboratory is to test the coffee acidity to sort the coffee bean and grade them. Not all coffee is grown equal but all coffee beans are acidic in nature.

The ideal state of our body is a near neutral of around pH7.2 but very little of us can actually said we are anywhere close to that figure. It is usually tempered by our lifestyles. Meat, white flour, sugar, coffee, carbonated drinks and generally processed food are some of the villains that altered and push the balance to acidic or for some overly acidic. The main concern about body being overly acidic is the lowering of our immune system opening gateways to many complications.

Hence in our fight to maintain balance, we introduce juicing to alkalize our body and to return it back to normality. Fruits and vegetable juices are alkalizing. Therefore when it comes down to coffee and cleanse they are of the opposite nature and we would suggest not to take alongside one another.

2) Coffee contains caffeine
Well! This has been an old saying and it fact, a boring one.. "Coffee contains caffeine and anything caffeinated is bad!" Nope! We are not going down that road.

Anyway we would still stress that "Caffeine in coffee lessens down the overall effectiveness of the cleanse process." Why? Caffeine is a compound that needs to be metabolized by the liver. During a juice cleanse, we used specially formulated juices that is full with nutrients that exist in the simplest form to increase absorption, giving our liver a good rest while the body detox and cleans itself. If we were to consume coffee, the caffeine compound will activate the metabolic functions of our liver, interrupting the full effectiveness of a cleanse.

Juice'd Pointers:

  • Do not be defeated! There is always a way out. Ideally try replace coffee with caffeinated green tea as its benefits outweigh the negative effects of caffeine. It is also great to find solace in herbal tea as it has an array of benefits including lower cholesterol, strong bones and so on. But do not use it as a substitute for water! Still consume your 2 liters per day.
  • To slowly stay off coffee do check our entry on "Keeping Coffee At Bay" Post.

Are we there yet? Coffee after Cleanse.
There is no right or wrong to going back to coffee after your cleanse. We all know the pros and the cons to coffee consumption. Everything indulge in excess will be risky to our health. Hence we do hope you will make a healthier choice by avoiding excessive sugar, syrups or artificial sweeteners with your favorite cup. Better still add Juice'd Zen White/ Soothing White with your coffee for a healthier choice or maybe you will even find your favorite Juice'd provides the same kind of perk up for you to start your day.

Benefits of Drinking Lemon water in the morning

There is a saying that goes "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" but let G.I Juicery tells you this
"Lemon Water in the morning goes all the WAY"

Here are the 8 reasons why

  1. Aids Digestion
    • Warm water stimulates the GI system, but with the zing of lemon it adds power and stimulates both GI and purify the liver.
  2. Supports Immune Function
    • Citrus fruit like lemon has high level of acid ascorbic/ vitamin C helps fight colds and build the immune system.
  3. Alkalize the body
    • Diet that mainly consists of meat, cheese, coffee and/or alcohol the body pH might be experiencing pH imbalance. Although lemon is acidic it’s highly alkalizing when it enters our body.
  4. Helps Detox
    • Lemon is a natural diuretic which helps to flush toxins.
  5. Energizes the body
    • Especially for must have morning coffee people, if you are hesitant to give up coffee because it helps to energizes you, try lemon and water, it’s zesty taste will help wake up your senses. This has been tried out with many coffee drinker and it is proven to work after 1 week morning coffee replacement.
  6. Keep skin beautiful
    • Chronic hydration or pH imbalance body can leave the skin looking dull or even leading to acne. Start your day right with lemon water that is packed with vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant that will help combat aging factors.
  7. Enhance building of red blood cells
  8. Iron is the main building block for red blood cells and the absorption of iron is greatly enhanced with the help of ascorbic acid.

So the next time you wake up in the morning remember to turn to your best companion before you take on the day. Warm Lemon Water.
